Professional B♭ Trumpets

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

B♭ trumpets are probably the most commonly used trumpet world-wide. Known for it's versatility, the B♭ trumpet is the most widely used horn for both students and professionals, alike. Many trumpet makers offer both student and professional model horns.

Professional trumpets are built with performance and longevity in mind. These instruments often feature parts built from the highest quality materials available and in some instances are assembled by hand. The cost of these materials and the added labor makes these trumpets more expensive but produces an instrument that has even response in all registers and dynamics. Due to the extra efforts that are made when building these trumpets they often produce a better and more consistent sound than their less expensive counterparts.

BACH 180S37 STRADIVARIUS SERIES B♭ TRUMPET

Often credited and criticized as the most well known professional B♭ trumpet, the Vincent Bach Stradivarius has been heard in professional settings since the 1920’s. The Bach trumpet that was first developed was nicknamed the “Stradivarius” of brass instruments, named after the famous string maker of the 17th and 18th centuries.

These instruments have continued their popularity due to the fantastic and rich sound they produce. The materials as well as the assembly methods used creates a trumpet that can fit into many musical settings. The most well known model if the 180-37, a standard weight trumpet with a 37 bell and a 25 leadpipe. It should be noted that the number system used on the bell and leadpipe are not an indication of their size. They were simply numbered in order that the new mandrells were created. The 37 bell is desirable due to the compact yet full sound it produces. Sound-wise this bell falls in the middle of the other popular bells and is not too bright or too dark. The 25 leadpipe is designed for ease of playing, as it helps to center the notes while aiming to help the intonation at the same time.

These instruments feature a 1st valve slide thumb saddle, 3rd valve slide finger ring as well as a dump slide on the end of the third slide to help empty any moisture that accumulates. The valves are monel plated and have proven to be extremely durable for decades of music making. A case, mouthpiece and basic care kit is included. If a professional trumpet player only had the option of owning and performing on one instrument, this Bach 180-37 would be at the top of the list!

BACH LT180-72 STADIVARIUS PROFESSIONAL B♭ TRUMPET

Another variation of the Vincent Bach Stradivarius trumpets is the LT180-72. Utilizing the same high quality materials and assembly processes as the 180-37, this model is a “lightweight” instrument, meaning that the body and bell of the trumpet are a thinner gauge material. Players often find that these instruments respond quicker since the thinner material can begin vibrating at a faster rate. The only downside is that the sound may not remain as full at the loudest dynamics when compared to the “standard” weight versions.

The LT180-72 features a 72 bell flare, designed to produce a strong and full sound. When coupled with the lighter weight material this bell became popular for broadway and lead trumpet players since it helped to produce a broad sound that could easily become bright when played with energy. The leadpipe on the LT180-72 is a 25O (also referred to as a 25 open). This leadpipe is very close to the standard 25 found on other models, but has a larger venturi (the opening of the leadpipe directly after the trumpet mouthpiece ends). This provides an open feeling while still maintaining many of the desirable characteristics of the 25.

Just like the 180-37, the LT180-72 features a 1st valve slide thumb saddle, 3rd valve slide finger ring as well as a dump slide on the end of the third slide to help empty any moisture that accumulates. The valves are monel plated and have proven to be extremely durable for decades of music making. In many musical settings this trumpet is at home, but excels in commercial situations. A case, mouthpiece and basic care kit is included

ADAMS A4 SELECTED SERIES B♭ TRUMPET

The Adams A4 trumpet may be one of the truly great new instrument designs on the market today. Crafted with precision and care in the Netherlands, the Adams company has grown to become one of the finest makers of brass instruments in the world today. Due to the intimate manufacturing process and Adams’ desire to provide the perfect instrument for each customer, many custom options such as bell thickness or finish are made available as a custom order. The “selected” models are Adams’ variations that have proven to work well for many players. These combine the appropriate finish with a specific choice of materials to produce a balanced instrument.

The A4 Selected model has quickly grown to become one of the most respected Adams trumpets on the market. Originally designed with Amik Guerra, an Adams performing artist, the A4 features a heavy valve section as well as 5.5” bell that is .40mm in thickness in gold brass. Like all other Adams brass instruments, many finish options are available from silver or gold plate to a unique antique lacquer. The Selected model comes in the extremely popular satin lacquer finish. While these trumpets are fantastic for solo performance, they work well in almost any setting imaginable. YAMAHA YTR-8335RS B♭ TRUMPET

Yamaha trumpets are often noted for their consistency as well as their ease of playing. The YTR-8335RS is one of the most popular professional trumpet models in their catalogue. Built from the .459” medium-large bore valve section on the 8335 line of Yamaha trumpets, the YTR-8335RS includes many unique features such as a reverse leadpipe (where the tuning slide fits over the leadpipe and not inside.) This is done to help the stability of pitch due to the added length of the leadpipe. This model includes a heavy mouthpiece receiver, often said to help the acoustics of the instrument as the sound vibrations are continued through the horn and do not dissipate like a standard receiver. Finger rings are placed on both the first and third valve slides, with no spit valve found on the third slide. This is a design benefit, as some players feel the instrument responds better without this added waterkey. The YTR-8335RS has monel plated valves, is finished in silverplate and comes with a deluxe double trumpet case that can be worn as a backpack. A Yamaha mouthpiece is also included.
