CUP MUTES
Just as their name describes, cup mutes are designed with a cone that inserts into the trumpet’s bell, with a cup at the end. These often produce a softer trumpet sound and decrease the projection of the instrument. Just like other mutes, these can be found in multiple styles of performance, ranging from big band, symphony orchestra, concert band, solo literature and pit orchestra.
DENIS WICK DW5531 ADJUSTABLE CUP MUTE
The Denis Wick Adjustable cup mute has become well known in both the jazz and classical worlds. This mute features an aluminum body with an aluminum adjustable cup. This is perfect when adjusting the sound of the cup, with a brighter and more focused sound when the cup is all the way “open” and a more muffled and diffused sound when the cup is pushed closer toward the bell. One of the biggest benefits comes from the ease of playing since these mutes do not feel as stuffy as other options on the market.

HUMES & BERG 102 CUP MUTE
One of the classic cup mute sounds, the Humes & Berg Stone Lined Cup mute is perfect for big band, jazz, and stylistic musical theater performance. Due to the warm sound these mutes produce, they are perfect for recreating an authentic big band or jazz trumpet sound heard in the late 1930’s and the 1940’s.

JORAL TRI-TONE CUP MUTE
The JoRal Tri-Tone cup mute is one of the most innovative options on the market due to the use of two removable felt rings that can be placed in the cup section. By adding or removing these felt rings, the player can create three distinct sounds. The body of the JoRal Tri-Tone Cup is made from spun-aluminum, creating a durable and consistent mute.

SOULO CUP MUTE
The Soulo Cup Mute is another variation on an adjustable design, where the cup is able to be adjusted closer and further from the bell of the instrument. This is one of the warmer sounding cup mutes, as it does not have the same overtones created from metal mutes.
